Why Debit Cards are Safer than Credit Cards

Over the years a lot of the things that used to require a credit card can now be done with a debit card. This offers a number of advantages but the biggest is the safety factor that comes from using a debit card. Make no mistake there are still reasons that you may need a credit card but for most of your day to day expenses a debit card is a much better option.

The main reason that debit cards are safer than credit cards is that you are not actually borrowing any money when you use your debit card. Instead you are using your own money. That means that you can't get yourself into trouble with debt by using a debit card. Given how many people have serious debt problems because of their credit cards this is not a small detail. In general you should not be using your credit cards to make day to day payments since you shouldn't be borrowing money to pay for them. Using a debit card eliminates this problem.

Not going into debt by using a credit card also means that you are not going to have to deal with paying the interest. One of the problems with credit card debt is the very high interest rate that is normally charged on these cards. Once you have a credit card debt problem it is very difficult to get out of it because of the interest that you have to pay. The best way to avoid this is to simply not get yourself into debt in the first place which is easy to do if you stick to using a debit card.

A debit card also won't allow you to damage your credit. Since you can't get yourself into debt you can't hurt your credit with a debit card. Given the number of people who have bad credit and how important your credit is in the modern world this is a major consideration. On the downside while you can't hurt your credit with a debit card you also can't help it. You will need to get a credit card in order to build up your credit but you have to be very careful about how you use it.

Debit cards also offer you more protection from the risk of identity theft than a credit card. In part this is because it is more difficult for somebody else to use your debit card since they can't do it without your PIN number. Even if somebody were to be able to use your debit card the amount that they would be able to spend is limited by the amount that you have in your account. With a credit card if somebody gets a hold of your information they can run up a huge amount of debt which could take you years to get sorted out.
