The Job of a Financial Advisor: What is it?

Managing your money is a challenging job and in truth most people really don't have the necessary skills to do it. This is where they can really benefit from the services of a financial advisor. While most people can figure out that a financial advisor will offer them advice on their finances many are not really sure what it is that they do or why they should hire one. There are actually lots of good reasons to use a financial advisor.

The job of a financial advisor is, not surprisingly to advise people about their finances. The first step in this process is to sit down with the client and determine just what their financial goals are; helping them meet these goals is the main part of the job. Of course this requires that their goals be realistic, if not the advisor may have to help people to adjust their goals to something that is realistically achievable. After all no amount of financial planning is going to allow somebody with huge amounts of credit card debt and no savings to retire in five years.

The next step of the financial advisors job is to work out a budget with the client. This will be in keeping with their financial goals. Once you know what these are you will know how much it is necessary to save. Once you know this you can work out a budget that will allow them to do this. In almost all cases this is going to require that there be some pretty big cuts along the way. This is something that the financial advisor can help them with as they help them to maximize their money.

Once you have a budget worked out and the client has started to save their money it will be necessary to help them to decide what they should do with that money. This is where the bulk of the financial advisors work will be. The advisor will make recommendations on what your portfolio should look like. This will have to take into consideration what your goals are and your tolerance for risk is. The big thing will be to make sure that you are properly diversified so that you are not taking more risk than you should be.

One thing that you need to make sure of when you are hiring a financial advisor is that they actually have your best interests at heart. A lot of so called financial advisors are really sales people for various investment products. Not surprisingly their advice usually includes buying whatever they are selling, whether it is a good option for you or not. If the financial advisor you are seeing offers free advice you can be sure that they make their money by selling you investment products. If you want unbiased advice you are going to have to pay for it.
